It’s been such a pleasure to do paintings of the Doorway staff in my studio. As I prepare for my show at Axis in the Spring, I am thinking about the Doorway, and all that this organization does for young people transitioning off of the street. I have been moved by the stories of change and transition that the Doorway helps to facilitate. I am doing paintings of Marilyn Dyck, Rikia Novotny, Aaron Jensen and Yvonne Franscisco as a way of describing the stories and underlayers of the city . While there are no actually people in my current urban landscapes, there are many references to those who are and were present in these places.
