Last week, Calgary photographer Sanja Lukac took black and white photos on the opening night of ‘Urban Blueprints.’ She truly captured the art opening and crowd. A number of people braved the rain that evening to view this new body of work. Thank you to everyone who attended. I also presented four portraits to The Doorway (an organization in Calgary that helps youth transition off of the streets). If you didn’t have a chance to see my show, the paintings can also be viewed online at: www.axisart.ca/artists/amyDryer.php
You can also check out the two interviews I did with Shaw TV about my current exhibit, painting process, and my connection to The Doorway:
Rob Mabee (owner of Axis Contemporary Art) writes about my show:
The origins of the city are explored in a dynamic new series of oil on canvas paintings by Calgary artist Amy Dryer. Known for her expressive and confident style, painterly quality and exuberant colour palette, Dryer brings ‘Urban Blueprints’ to AXIS gallery this month. Exploring the streets, alleyways and train tracks of the city, Dryer’s paintings work with the familiar patterns of urbanization. Lines of electrical wires crisscross the horizon, train tracks web through railway yards, and the foundations and girders of bridges and buildings dot the landscape. This is the subject of Amy Dryer’s ‘Urban Blueprints’.
Talking about this new series Dryer says, “When creating a show that represents urban landscape – wires, bridges and spaces in Calgary – I also wanted to consider the people who pass through and experience these places first hand. I approached “The Doorway,” an organization dear to my heart that helps youth transition off of the streets of Calgary. I have been moved by the stories of transition, change and independence that The Doorway helps to facilitate. While the urban landscapes that I depict do not have any actual people painted in them there are many layers and references to the people who were and are present in these places”.
